The best candidates for the tummy tuck procedure are women after multiply pregnancies or basically women who lost significant amount of weight and were left with excess skin and fatty tissue in the abdominal area which does not respond to diet or exercises. Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) reduces scars after other surgeries in the abdominal area (for example caesarian, C-sections etc.) and partly reduce stretch marks.
Tummy tuck may be performed as a full abdominoplasty or as a mini tummy tuck. If necessary, during the same procedure liposuction can be performed.
Full tummy tuck involves surgery around mid and lower stomach together with tightening of the abdominal wall and also new naval placement. The incision is usually made from hip to hip at pubic level. In our clinic full tummy tuck is very often performed with liposuction of abdominal area. In case of a mini tummy tuck the incision is shorter (similar to caesarian) and the navel is not usually moved (recovery time is shorter) – basically mini abdominoplasty is less invasive. In general, the scar after tummy tuck is low enough so it can be easily covered by underwear.
Abdominoplasty is a major and serious procedure. Like every surgery, it carries risks and in comparison with other cosmetic surgical procedures, abdominoplasty carries higher risk of complications and longer length of recovery. All pros and cons of the surgery should be discussed by the plastic surgeon with a patient.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, after which the patient is left with drains (in 1-3 days the drains are removed) and a special elastic garment to wear permanently for 6 weeks.
For the first few days the abdomen will probably be swollen and bruised. The patient feels some pain and discomfort which can be controlled by painkillers. It will take a while until the patient will feel like herself again. Recovery is quicker for those patients who were in good shape / exercised before the surgery. Exercise helps to heal better and reduce swelling and also lowers the chance of blood clots. Depending on a patients condition, the length of stay in the clinic should be planned for at least 3-4 nights after the surgery. Elastic garment should be worn during the first 6 weeks non-stop. In the clinic, you will get instructions how to treat the incision during the first few weeks. Stitches should be removed after 14 days. About a week after removal of stitches, it is a good idea to start treating the incision with ointments that help the scar to flatten out and lighten its colour. The patient should be prepared to take care of a new tummy. For example: during first 3 weeks after the operation the patient cannot do any heavy work, even vacuuming; for 3 months after the surgery sauna, solarium, sunbathing is forbidden, smokers should give up smoking or at least drastically limit smoking before and after the surgery.
