Rhinoplasty is a type of surgery which improves the appearance and proportions of the patient’s nose. It can also resolve problems with breathing, snoring. The best candidates for the surgery are women and men with disproportion to the size, width, profile of the nose (hump), breathing problems, deviated septum, misshapen tip, asymmetry of the nostrils or after nose injury.
Depending on the patient’s needs cartilage or/and bone of the nose may be corrected. During direct assessment, the plastic surgeon decides on the method of performing the surgery. Nose surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia.
After the surgery 1-2 nights stay in the clinic is recommended. After the procedure the patient has to wear a special dressing which secures the nose (for about 7-10 days after the surgery). During the surgery special tampons are placed in the nose to secure it from the inside for the first 1-2 days and then they are removed.
After the surgery, bruising and swelling may occur. It takes a few days for the bruising to come off. The swelling takes longer to resolve depending on the extent of the surgery. On the first day after the procedure, the patient has to stay in bed with head elevated. For the next three months, the patient should avoid any kind of injuries/contact, team sport, as well as excessive heat (including sauna, sun, solarium) or cold. Each patient receives detailed recommendations. The full healing of the nose takes 6-12 months but the results are long-lasting.
Each surgery carries a risk. In case of rhinoplasty, there is a risk of infection, excessive bleeding, scaring and haematomas. Temporary reduction of sensitivity of the nose and upper lip is possible, but usually it comes back to normal after several weeks. Each patient is informed about all risks and complications during the direct consultation with a plastic surgeon.
The surgery enhances facial harmony and self-confidence.
