Male breast reduction (so-called gynecomastia) is a procedure during which over-developed, enlarged male breasts are being corrected. Gynecomastia is necessary if male breasts have excess of fat tissue, glandular tissue or both excess fat and glandular tissue. It can occur unilaterally (on one breast) or bilaterally (on both breasts).
Before the direct assessment, it is good when a patient undergoes an ultrasound (usg) examination to estimate the amount of fat and glandular tissue and to check for any abnormalities.
During direct assessment, a plastic surgeon chooses a method of performing gynecomastia correction. In case of fat tissue excess, gynecomastia will be performed with the use of liposuction. In case of glandular tissue excess, surgical incision will be made and the glandular tissue removed. During the surgery, the position and the size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced. If necessary, gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision.
Gynecomastia is performed under general anaesthesia and involves at least 2 days of stay in the clinic. After the procedure, a patient is left with drains (after 1-2 days drains are removed) and a special elastic vest has to be worn permanently for 3-6 weeks.
For the first few days the chest will probably be swollen and bruised, a patient feels some pain and discomfort which can be controlled by painkillers. It will take a while until a patient will feel like himself again in the operated area. Recovery is quicker for those patients who were in good shape / exercised their body before the surgery. In the clinic, patients receive instructions how to treat the incision during the first few weeks. There can be absorbable or non absorbable stitches used (removal after 8 days). After stitches removal, it is good to start treating the incision with ointments that help the scar to flatten out and lighten in colour.
As each surgery, gynecomastia carries some risk. It includes: bleeding (haematoma), blood clots, infection, temporary changes in nipple sensation etc. During direct assessment, a patient should be informed about all risks connected with undergoing the surgery.
Gynecomastia results in improvement of look of the male breasts, enhancement of self-image and confidence.
