If double chin is significantly visible or skin in the area is saggy and lost its elasticity, reduction of double chin is advisable. Double chin is caused by excess of fat tissue, excess of skin, or both excess of fat tissue and skin.
During direct assessment, the plastic surgeon examines the patient and decides whether a person has excess of skin or fat tissue and consequently chooses a method of correction. In case of fat tissue, the procedure is performed with the use of liposuction. The procedure is performed in general anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia can be used if a small body area is treated, but this happened very rarely. Liposuction involves small incisions, infusion of a special liquid and then inserting a special cannula to loosen excess fat tissue and finally suck out the fat.
After the surgery, a patient should stay for at least 1 night in the clinic under medical care. For the first couple days, the majority of patients have swelling and bruises, feel stiff and sore in the operated area. The surgery itself is painless, but after the procedure for the first few days patients feel some pain and discomfort which can be controlled by medications. Elastic garment / tourniquet should be worn during the first 6 weeks non-stop. In a clinic, a patient should get instructions how to treat the area after liposuction of chin. As a result of a surgery, the patient receives a better shaped chin.
In case of skin excess, the procedure involves surgical removal of excess skin. After the surgery absorbable or non absorbable sutures may be applied (removal after 7 days). About a week after removal of stitches, it is a good idea to start treating the incision with ointments that help the scar to flatten out and lighten in colour. The incision is almost invisible as it is hidden below the chin.
It is possible also to use plasma equipment for the under chin area. We use Renuvion equipment that firms the skin excess. It is advisable for patients who have small skin excess in the area.
Each surgery carries risks. In case of chin correction there is a risk of infection, fat or blood clots, bleeding, etc. All risks connected with undergoing the surgery should be discussed with the plastic surgeon during direct assessment.
Chin correction gives visible, long-lasting results, improves our look and enhances self-image.
